Above all, our commitment to low income seniors is to provide affordable housing, access to services and programs, and an environment where residents can thrive in their own community. GEDCO's senior housing includes Gallagher Mansion, Epiphany House, Stadium Place (consisting of four residential apartment complexes) and soon, the GREEN HOUSE© Residences which will provide long term care for frail elders.
What is the affect of a low income on senior citizens?
Elders of low and moderate income have worked hard their whole lives to provide for themselves and their families. When rent is unaffordable and subsidized housing is located in neighborhoods of mixed generation and ability, seniors often feel unsafe and removed from their native communities.
Now residents are able to feel safe in an apartment they can afford. In addition, they have increased access to and guidance in healthcare benefits. Given that lacking proper healthcare or health insurance can lead to exacerbated poor health, onset of early frailty and multiple chronic conditions, these supportive services are integral in maintaining quality of life and self-determination.
What supportive services can residents take part in?
Service coordinators are on site to help residents connect to a great variety of government assistance services, neighborhood partnerships and resident-run programs that are available.
For example, elders can catch a ride to an appointment or go shopping on the shuttle or through a cooperation with MTA Mobility. Resident associations coordinate clubs, meetings and volunteer activities. Some residents hold jobs, go to health and wellness seminars offered through our partners, and join in intergenerational activities with the neighborhoods at large.
Is senior housing a nursing home?
While the goal of GEDCO's senior housing is to provide a continuum of housing and services, ranging from active living through long-term care, a different spirit prevails among residents and staff.
Instead of an institution that proposes to "take care" of seniors, GEDCO apartments provide an environment where older adults can continue to lead the life that interests them and are provided with the tools to do it.
We consider Stadium Place an affordable retirement community with intergenerational bonds to the neighboring community. Holistic wellness means that residents maintain their quality of living: being engaged mentally, supported socially, nurtured spiritually and nourished physically.
How do people's lives improve here?
Residents are able to lead meaningful and engaged lives in a safe, affordable and beautiful environment. Like the motto says, GEDCO is "building caring and compassionate communities."
For residents, that means access to service coordinators who ensure their needs are being met, that they are linked to the programs that interest and serve them most fully, and that they have the opportunity to age in the community of their choice. Date: 12/22/2008
